Iron Infusions
Iron deficiency is one of the UK’s most common yet overlooked health conditions. Many people live with symptoms they have come to think are normal, or struggle with treatments that are difficult to tolerate and never fully resolve how they feel. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.
Iron Tablets often don't work
Iron tablets can cause nausea, constipation, or stomach pain, and they are often poorly absorbed. They can also take months to improve iron levels, and may be less effective if there is inflammation, gut disease, or ongoing blood loss.
Could Low Iron Be Causing Your Symptoms?
Many people are told their blood count is “normal” but still have low ferritin or low iron stores. You can have symptoms long before you become anaemic.
- Ferritin: your stored iron
- Transferrin saturation: how much iron is available for your body to use
This can help explain why you may still feel unwell even when your haemoglobin is normal. Our doctors take time to understand the underlying cause of your iron deficiency, not just replace the iron, so we can help improve your levels long term.
- Persistent fatigue and weakness that doesn't improve with rest
- Shortness of breath during normal activities
- Heart palpitations
- Pale skin
- Dizziness and recurring headaches
- Brittle nails and hair thinning or loss
- Restless legs, particularly at night
- Unusual cravings for ice or non-food substances
- Difficulty concentrating and mental fog
- Irritability and mood changes
- Memory problems
- Reduced ability to manage everyday tasks
- Heavy periods or menstrual blood loss
- Pregnancy, after childbirth or breastfeeding
- Perimenopause or menopause-related heavy bleeding
- Endometriosis or fibroids
- Vegetarian or vegan diets
- Endurance training or high levels of exercise
- Digestive conditions such as coeliac disease, Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis
- Previous weight-loss or bariatric surgery
- Ongoing blood loss from the stomach or bowel
- Preparation for surgery, particularly if you have low ferritin or anaemia
What Happens on the Day of Your Iron Infusion?

We recommend eating and drinking as normal before your appointment and wearing comfortable clothing with sleeves that can easily be rolled up. You are welcome to bring a book, headphones or work with you.
When you arrive, you will first be seen by one of our doctors. We will review your blood results, confirm the correct dose, answer any questions and make sure you are happy to proceed.
A small cannula (plastic tube) is placed into a vein in your arm or hand. This is like having a blood test.
Your iron infusion is then started and given slowly through the cannula. The infusion takes around 30–40 minutes.
During the infusion you can sit back and relax. Many people read, listen to music, work on a laptop or simply rest.
You will be monitored closely throughout your treatment by our clinical team. We regularly check how you are feeling and are there to answer any questions or concerns.
Some people notice a warm or flushed feeling in the first few minutes. This is usually temporary and settles quickly if the infusion is slowed or briefly paused.
Once the infusion is complete, we will ask you to stay for 30 minutes for monitoring before you leave. Most people feel completely well afterwards and can return home, work, or normal activities the same day.

Questions and Answers
Essential Tests (within 6 weeks): You must have a Full Blood Count (FBC) and Iron Studies including Ferritin levels. These current results are critical for our consultant to accurately assess your iron status and treatment needs.
Recommended Additional Tests (within 2 years): While not mandatory, comprehensive screening including Thyroid Function, Liver Function, Vitamin B12, Folate, and Electrolytes provides valuable context for your overall health and treatment optimisation.
Need blood tests arranged? We work with leading UK laboratory providers to offer convenient, competitively-priced blood testing. Results are sent directly to our clinic for review before your appointment, ensuring your consultant is fully prepared.
Iron infusion therapy may be recommended if you have iron deficiency anaemia or iron deficiency that hasn't responded to oral supplements. Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, pale skin, brittle nails, and restless legs. Our consultant will review your blood results, medical history, and symptoms to determine if IV iron therapy is appropriate for you.
We provide iron infusion therapy for patients aged 16 and older. Treatment suitability is always determined through our comprehensive medical assessment, considering individual clinical need, health status, and treatment history. Our consultant-led approach ensures safe and appropriate care for each patient.
The infusion itself typically takes 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the type and dose of iron prescribed. This includes preparation time and monitoring. Most patients receive their treatment in a comfortable, clinical setting where they can relax during the process.
Most patients tolerate iron infusions very well. Mild side effects may include temporary metallic taste, headache, or nausea. Serious allergic reactions are rare but can occur. Our medical team monitors you throughout the treatment and is trained to manage any adverse reactions. We'll discuss all potential risks during your consultation.
Many patients begin to notice improvements in energy levels within a few days to 2 weeks after treatment. Full benefits typically develop over 4-6 weeks as your body utilises the iron to produce healthy red blood cells. Individual response times vary based on the severity of deficiency and overall health.
The number of treatments depends on your individual iron requirements, body weight, and severity of deficiency. Some patients need only one infusion, while others may require 2-3 sessions. Our consultant will create a personalised treatment plan and discuss the expected number of infusions during your consultation.
Iron infusions can be safely administered during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy when iron deficiency cannot be corrected with oral supplements. Our consultants have extensive experience treating pregnant patients and will carefully evaluate your individual situation to ensure the safest approach for both you and your baby.
Most patients can drive after their infusion, but we recommend arranging transport for your first treatment as some people may feel tired or lightheaded. We'll monitor you for at least 30 minutes after your infusion and ensure you feel well before discharge.
Eat a light meal before your appointment and stay well-hydrated. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up. Bring any current medications list and recent blood test results. Avoid taking oral iron supplements on the day of treatment unless specifically instructed by your consultant.
Iron tablets are absorbed through the digestive system and can take months to restore iron levels, often causing stomach upset. Iron infusions deliver iron directly into the bloodstream, bypassing digestive issues and providing faster, more complete iron replacement. Infusions are particularly beneficial for patients who can't tolerate oral iron or have absorption problems.
